Dr Oehlers received his undergraduate (2004-2007) and PhD degrees (2008-2012) from the University of Auckland in New Zealand working on zebrafish models of human inflammatory bowel disease. He then pursued his postdoctoral training at
Duke University Medical Centre in North Carolina working on the zebrafish-Mycobacterium marinum model of tuberculosis (2012-2016).
From 2016-2021, he was a group leader at the Centenary Institute in Sydney working on bacterial-host interactions. He is Principal Investigator at A*STAR Infectious Diseases Labs since 2022.
