Signature Seminar Series: Lung Regeneration: Cell, Models, and Mechanisms

ABOUT THE LECTURE

Tissue regeneration is a dynamic process involving significant changes at both the cellular and molecular level to replenish lost cells and restore function. In many cases, repair also involves resurgence of cells from a quiescent or poised state, onset of proliferation, and changes in shape, for example through transient stretching and expansion to cover areas of damage or denudation, followed by a return to homeostasis. Dysregulation in the recovery of lost tissues has dire consequences, often leading to debilitating diseases. Our lab uses a combination of mouse models, human lung tissues, and single cell based transcriptomic analyses to understand mechanisms of tissue regeneration and the cellular basis of disease pathogenesis, and to develop therapies for lung diseases. Our research program has been focusing on three major areas: (1) identifying the cellular sources that can both resist injuries and replenish lost cells; (2) developing ex vivo human tissue-based platforms to model regeneration and diseases; and (3) understanding the spatial-temporal control of molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying tissue regeneration.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Purushothama Rao Tata (Tata), PhD, is an Associate Professor (with tenure) of Cell Biology and Medicine at Duke University. Tata received his PhD from University of Ulm, Germany followed by postdoctoral training at MGH/Harvard Medical School. Currently, Tata lab is focusing on understanding the cellular ensembles in the context of homeostasis, regeneration and diseases in diverse epithelial tissues including lung.
