Project Title

Project on Malaria Elimination and Communicable Disease Control in Asia and the Pacific to strengthen the capability of National Medical Regulatory Agencies in the Greater Mekong Sub-region.

Project Description

CoRE and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have teamed up to strengthen the regulatory systems in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). The overarching goal of the collaboration is to increase availability and use of quality assured commodities appropriate to internationally agreed guidelines for malaria and other communicable disease threats.

Furthermore, through this project, CoRE aims to build on the work by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other partners, and stakeholder consultations to strengthen the capacity and capabilities of regulatory agencies in the GMS. The project will cover the countries in GMS including Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam. Yunan and Guangxi of PRC are not included in the project.

The project is divided into two phases.

Project Outcome

The objective is to implement high quality regulatory programs to enhance regulatory capabilities in the GMS and to build a long-term capacity building plan to achieve sustainability.

Overall, this collaboration will bring together ADB’s network, resources, efforts and expertise and CoRE’s network, its expertise in regulatory approaches of therapeutics products and its strength in education with the common goal to contribute to the elimination of Malaria.

Project Status: Completed

Since the project started in October 2015, the project team has completed the literature review of the regulatory systems in the five GMS countries which provides a comprehensive update on existing data as well as data gaps on the regulatory environment in each of the countries. To confirm and especially to fill the identified gaps, the team developed a strategy to effectively assess the regulatory systems in a more holistic manner. In essence, a combination of assessment tools, including a questionnaire, semi-structured interviews and individual discussions with a diverse group of stakeholders, was employed.
