Internship position 1: GRACES and Ageing Well

RESEARCH PROJECT 1

Project Title:

Grandparenting and Caregiving Exchanges in Sandwiched Families (GRACES)

Project Overview:

The research project is funded by the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF). Sandwiched families, or families supporting both grandparents and grandchildren, may be involved in intergenerational exchanges such as grandparenting and caregiving to grandparents, which have important implications for family formation and ageing-in-place policies in Singapore. The study will interview 600 Singaporean grandparents, aged 60 years and older, on their past, present, and potential intergenerational exchanges, including instrumental, socioemotional, and financial exchanges. Quantitative methods will be applied to describe the typologies of sandwiched families, and investigate their patterns of exchanges, leading to policy insights for family formation and ageing-in-place.

Responsibilities:

a. Programme survey questionnaire using Qualtrics software (which will be taught to you)

b. Contact potential survey respondents by mail and phone

c. Shadow and assist our staff with in-person interviews of older adult respondents.

d. Support the Centre’s education initiatives where required.

e. Assist in ad-hoc duties as assigned by the supervisor.

RESEARCH PROJECT 2

Project Title:

Ageing Well in the Urban Environment: Meeting the Health and Social Needs of Older Adults

Project Overview:

Demographic changes and urbanization are global developments that pose challenges to ageing well. Both Germany and Singapore are facing similar macro-level trends albeit in different socio-cultural contexts. The German and the Singapore populations are ageing rapidly, which is challenging traditional family structures and models of caregiving, stressing health systems in which primary care is less strongly developed and highlighting the importance of financial security among older persons. The aim of this project is to investigate to what extent four key dimensions of wellbeing at older ages – health, mobility, loneliness, and equity – are related to potentially modifiable aspects of older adults’ living environment, specifically health service availability and accessibility, built environment characteristics, and its age friendliness. We adopt a mixed-method, longitudinal perspective to investigate whether the relationships that we find cross-sectional are consistent over time.

Responsibilities:

a. Assist supervisor with project coordination and management, which involves handling the administrative and logistics needs of the project.

b. Fieldwork exposure: Shadowing field interviewers and conducting interviews

c. Provide support for any other administrative aspect of the research project as needed.
