Global Experts Convene to Advance Pathogen Genomics Surveillance Implementation

The Asia Pathogen Genomics Initiative (Asia PGI) recently played an active role at the Global Partners Forum in Bangkok, Thailand. The forum was hosted by the International Pathogen Surveillance Network (IPSN) under the auspices of the WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence. From 18-22 November 2024, a week of meetings - including the main forum and  pre-workshops - brought together a global network of over 200 pathogen genomics experts. The discussions focused on charting the next steps for implementating  pathogen genomic surveillance on a global scale.

Translating genomics from research to public health requires a multi-sector and whole systems approach. Preceding the Global Partner’s Forum was a workshop on Capacity building and implementation, during which Asia PGI was invited to present an overview of its training activities and played a key role in providing a regional perspective on capacity building for implementation. It was discussed that improving the access to pathogen genomic surveillance globally (including resource limited settings) will require strong coordinated efforts in capacity building and a multi-sectorial approach to ensure implementation.

In the fast-evolving world of pathogen genomics, innovations like wastewater genomic surveillance are redefining early threat detection and public health responses. These technologies exemplify the forum’s shared mission: to accelerate advancements in pathogen genomics and integrate them into public health systems worldwide.

As representatives of Asia PGI, we introduced a web-based dashboard mapping wastewater surveillance projects across Asia. This interactive platform not only highlights ongoing efforts but also serves as an invitation for global collaboration.

By profiling projects across the region, we aim to create a comprehensive repository of initiatives, facilitating knowledge-sharing and alignment in tackling emerging health threats.

A centrepiece of the forum was the unveiling of a collection of tools co-developed by WHO IPSN and its global partners, addressing the challenges of scaling pathogen genomics capabilities. As part of this effort, Asia PGI showcased its Pathogen Prioritisation Tool in a dedicated breakout session. The tool, developed over the past year, enables countries to systematically prioritise pathogens for genomic surveillance based on their public health significance.

The session sparked lively discussions, with participants providing valuable feedback on its components and potential applications. This co-development process underscored the power of collaboration, reinforcing the tool's relevance and usability for diverse contexts, including resource-limited settings.

Looking ahead: Building on shared insights

The Global Partners Forum reaffirmed the importance of fostering partnerships to accelerate progress in pathogen genomics. Asia PGI’s contributions—ranging from capacity building, innovative tools to collaborative platforms—reflect our commitment to advancing genomic surveillance capabilities in Asia and beyond.

By engaging with global experts and leveraging shared insights, we continue to refine our approaches, ensuring they are tailored to address both regional and global public health challenges.

Stay tuned as we expand on these initiatives, fostering a resilient and connected pathogen genomics network for a safer, healthier future.
