Duke-NUS delivers festive joy to St Luke’s ElderCare

In support of SingHealth President's Challenge 2022, Duke-NUS delivered mooncakes and goodie bags to the seniors at St Luke’s ElderCare on 7 September 2022. St Luke’s ElderCare is one of the five benefitting agencies of this year’s campaign.

Led by Dr Suzanne Scott, Deputy Director & Head of Development, the Development team prepared 70 goodies bags and some mooncakes for the elderly who attend day care and rehabilitation programmes at the centre located in Punggol.

The team distributing goodie bags to the seniors as they enjoyed their mooncake. The goodie bags comprise food items such as biscuits, milo and coffee.

“This is a heart warming reminder that while we fundraise for research and education, the true beneficiaries of our work welcome in person visits, and a warm touch… and everyone enjoys a slice of mooncake.”,” said Suzanne.

St Luke’s ElderCare delivers a full range of integrated services and programmes for elders through a nursing home in Ang Mo Kio and 24 eldercare centres island-wide. These include maintenance day care, day rehabilitation programmes such as physiotherapy and occupational therapy, dementia care, nursing care, respite care, wellness programmes and transportation.

The services are also designed to benefit elders who have suffered physical disabilities as a result of stroke, falls or accidents, as well as the frail and lonely who have no one to look after them during working hours. Here’s the story of Mdm Tan Ai Lin who was under the care of St Luke's ElderCare:

Mdm Tan Ai Lin was having lunch with her ex-bosses when she suddenly saw the world moving and spinning around her. Her children brought her to Sengkang General Hospital, where she realised that she had suffered a stroke. After attending therapy at the hospital, she was referred to the care of St Luke's ElderCare (SLEC).

With all the support and care from her family and the staff, she was determined to recover quickly and be independent. Today, she leads a healthy and active lifestyle. She even spurs on the elders around her, encouraging them on to join her in the fun at music and exercise sessions at SLEC Sumang Centre.
