Palliative Care Course for Therapists(Classroom & Asynchronous)

Welcome to the Palliative Care Course for Therapists(Classroom & Asynchronous)!

The aim of this 3-day course is to equip occupational therapists (OT), physiotherapists (PT) and speech & language therapists (SLT) across all settings with professional competency and confidence of therapists with the necessary knowledge to work with patients and families facing life-threatening illnesses.

There are two parts in the course: Part 1 is on foundation palliative care management for all therapists while Part 2 focuses on professional specific knowledge and applications. Preliminary topics include clinical overview of common life-limiting illnesses, serious illness communication, basic symptom management, role of OT / PT / SLT in management of patients with progressive life-limiting illness and integration of these therapies into the holistic management of such patients.

This course is a combination of e-learning delivered via the Duke-NUS Learning Management System and face-to-face sessions.

Foundation for ALL (2 days):

Module 1: Introduction to Palliative Care
Module 2: Palliative Care in Cancer and Non-Cancer
Module 3: Pain & Symptom Management
Module 4: Caring for the Dying
Module 5: Basic Communication at the End of Life
Module 6: Grief & Bereavement
Module 7: Self-Care
Module 8: Common Psychological Issues in Palliative Care

Profession Specific (1 day):

For Physiotherapists:
Module 1: Goal setting in PT for patients with life-limiting illness
Module 2: PT management for patients with life-limiting illness and Pain or Cardiopulmonary issues
Module 3: PT management for patients with life-limiting illness and Complex mobility

For Occupational Therapists:
Module 1: Implications of life-limiting conditions on OT management
Module 2: Goal setting in OT for patients with life-limiting illness
Module 3: Common interventions in OTs for patients with life-limiting illness
Module 4: Application of OT process in palliative care

For Speech & Language Therapists:
Topic 1: Management of Swallowing issues in patients with life-limiting illness
Topic 2: Management of Cognitive and Communication issues in patients with life-limiting illness
Topic 3: Goal Setting and Collaboration in patients with life-limiting illness
Topic 4: Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

Certification

Course participants will be awarded with an e-Certificate of Completion at the end of the course*.

*The e-Certificate of Completion will only be awarded to participants who complete all course work & evaluation and attend all the teaching sessions.

The above may be subject to changes.

Singapore Citizens or Singapore PRs who are eligible for the SkillsFuture Subsidy may have to bear the full course fee of S$1,296 under any of the following circumstances:-

(i) Withdrawal from the course on or after course start date
(ii) Failure to fulfil a minimum attendance of 80% for the teaching sessions
(iii) Failure to complete and pass all prescribed coursework and assessments for the course
