A new chapter begins: Duke-NUS’ 2024 PhD intake embarks on their journey
A warm welcome to our new PhD students—let the journey begin!
Duke-NUS welcomed 31 newly minted PhD students to the School with a vibrant orientation from 19 to 23 August, setting the stage for their academic journey over the next few years.
During their exciting first week, the students participated in a flurry of activities designed to facilitate their smooth transition into the School’s graduate studies programmes, from interactive icebreakers to team-building activities that included a creative painting session, fostering camaraderie and collaboration among the new cohort. They also heard from members of the PhD Student Council who shared valuable insights on student life and lab rotations.
To give the aspiring scientists a flavour of the cutting-edge research conducted at the School, two days of the orientation were dedicated to an exclusive programme organised by the Graduate Studies team showcasing ground-breaking discoveries from Duke-NUS’ five signature research programmes. Meaningful connections were forged as the students connected with faculty over engaging talks and networking sessions, where they also learnt about the resources available to support their research.
The orientation concluded with an inspiring career readiness session as well as a safety training workshop and tour, which equipped students with the essential tools and knowledge to navigate the challenging yet rewarding world of research.
