Clinical Performance Centre

Duke-NUS Clinical Performance Centre (CPC) & Procedural Skills Learning Lab (PSLL)

The Clinical Performance Centre (CPC) is a simulated clinical environment that provides opportunities for medical students to learn and practice their clinical skills. Learning is enforced through a safe environment using task simulators and Real Patients or Standardized Patients (SP).

Clinical Simulation

Clinical Performance Centre (CPC)

The Clinical Performance Centre (CPC) is a simulated clinical environment that provides a safe learning space with opportunities for medical students to learn and practise their clinical skills using various simulators which include full-bodied manikins, vital signs simulators and part task trainers as well as Real and Simulated Patients (SP).

The CPC is consists of  examination rooms that  are designed to look like consultation rooms and simulation laboratories that are designed to look like patient wards in the hospital setting.  All the rooms are equipped with audio-visual recording equipment. As it is vital that medical students acquire essential clinical knowledge and skills in a hands-on environment, the CPC is used to facilitate clinical skills teaching with SPs or real patients accompanied by faculty feedback at the end of each teaching session.  Simulated case scenarios using either full bodied manikins, SPs, or hybrid simulation using SPs with part task trainers are integrated in the curriculum. These allow the students to holistically approach each case applying their medical knowledge, history taking skills, physical examination skills, procedural skills and communication skills. Debriefing is also facilitated in the CPC which encourages the students to reflect and is conducted at the end of each simulation to optimise the students’ learning.

The CPC is also used for assessment activities that are conducted for students in both formative and summative settings.

Clinical Skills

Procedural Skills Learning Lab (PSLL)

The Procedural Skills Learning Lab is a versatile and dynamic space designed to support students in mastering the clinical skills essential for delivering outstanding patient-centered care. This lab offers a dedicated environment where students can engage in self-directed practice, allowing them to refine their techniques and build confidence in a controlled setting.

To accommodate diverse schedules and maximise learning opportunities, the lab provides extended hours, ensuring that students have ample time to practice and perfect their skills. Whether you’re preparing for an upcoming exam or simply looking to enhance your clinical proficiency, the Procedural Skills Learning Lab is an invaluable resource for your educational journey.

Simulated Patient Programme

Simulated Patients (SPs) are individuals who are carefully trained to portray patient roles. The similarity of these portrayals to real patient situations allows our students to practice interviewing patients in a very authentic environment. By using SPs rather than real patients for an assessment, every student can be assessed in a standardized encounter which increases the validity of the assessment. These simulated doctor-patient encounters are closely monitored under the guidance of Duke-NUS faculty members and are recorded for the purpose of learning and assessment. The simulated encounter is also a powerful tool for teaching and assessing the communication and procedural skills of medical students.
