Bio
I graduated with an MD degree from Yale University, and was a resident in neurology and psychiatry at Yale. During residency I also attended Yale Graduate School and obtained a PhD. My thesis was entitled Genomic and pathophysiological characterization of human temporal lobe epilepsy. My focus was on surgically obtained human brain tissue and studying genome-wide gene expressions.
I hold current and unrestricted medical licenses and specialist accreditations in Singapore, US and Canada. After a subspecialty fellowship in Neuropsychiatry, I obtained sub-specialty certification in Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Neurology (UCNS, USA).
I am board certified in USA (American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology), Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.
I was an assistant professor (tenure track) at Yale and then joined Duke University Medical School as associate professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science. Then I was seconded to Duke-NUS Medical School as inaugural faculty. I was granted Tenure in 2012.I started the Neurocognitive Genomics Laboratory in Duke-NUS and subsequently the Brain-Computer Interface Laboratory. With co-investigators we have researched and published extensively on cognitive disorders, attention disorders, anxiety disorders and autism.
As part of my university appointment, I engage in clinical work (20% FTE) at Singapore General Hospital Department of Psychiatry where I started the Neuropsychiatry Subspecialty Clinic. Through seminars, team-based, bedside and clinic-based teaching, I am active in the education of Duke-NUS medical students, specialist trainees and peer specialists.
The Ministry of Health, Singapore, appointed me Deputy Chief Examiner for Psychiatry in 2014 when we set up the new psychiatry specialty examination,
At the Academy of Medicine Singapore I set up and was inaugural Chairman of the Section of Neuropsychiatry from 2017 till 2021.
