ALUMNI SHARING AND TEACHING

HO Posting Sharing Session (4 December 2018)

On 4th December 2018, a housemanship posting sharing session was organised. Several alumni from Class of 2017 and 2018 – Dr Francine Tan, Dr Alicia Ong, Dr Mark Tan, Dr Jann Chua, Dr Ivy Lau and Tan Dr Hong Yu - came back to Duke-NUS to share about their experiences working in different hospitals and clusters, and the types of HO postings they did. During the two-hour candid session, students listened to the alumni’s personal stories and opinions on the working environment, hours, workload and quality of teaching at each of their posting.

Other alumni also came down to share their stories with students during the Neurology and Neurosurgery Residency Talk (15 February 2019), the Anaesthesiology Resident’s Sharing (21 February 2019) and the Psychology SIG Talk (23 January 2019). For the Neurology and Neurosurgery Residency Talk, we had Dr Kaavya Narasimhalu, Dr Yong Ming Hui, and Dr Swati Jain. On 12 December, Class of 2018 alumni, Dr Tan Yubin and Dr Bok Ke Xin, shared with their juniors the challenges they faced in their CPX4 experience, common pitfalls students should take note of, and gave tips on the topics that should be prepared for and how to best do so. They also shared resources that were useful during their own preparation.

Innovation and Design Thinking Course

Our Class of 2015 alumni, Dr Andrew Chou and Dr Petty Chen, designed and taught the newly carved second-year module ‘Innovation and Design-Thinking’, aimed at inspiring and shaping our future clinicians and emphasising how essential creative thinking is for the future.

Dr Shravan Verma (Class of 2014) and Dr Rena Dharmawan (Class of 2011), who are also Duke-NUS alumni, helped facilitate the course and shared their entrepreneurial success stories. They illustrated how their med-tech innovations have improved patient care delivery and transformed the way medicine impacts patients and their families. Dr Verma’s start-up, Speedoc, improves the provision of house-call doctor services, and Dr Dharmawan’s online platform, Jaga-Me Home Care, helps plug healthcare gaps with a pool of nurses providing on-demand services.

Suturing Workshop (18 January 2019)

Organised by Surgery SIG, in collaboration Orthopaedics SIG and O&G SIG, the Suturing Workshop is for the teaching of suturing techniques that are relevant to future clinical practice.

The workshop offered two courses: Basic and Advanced, tailored to different suturing techniques at varying levels of difficulty. The Basic Course included stitches such as simple interrupted, continuous non-locking, continuous locking, as well as hand tie. The Advanced Course included stitches such as subcuticular running, vertical mattress, horizontal mattress as well as episiotomy repair.

Among the mentors of this session, we had some alumni doctors coming down to help the students with the courses offered: Dr Ku Chee Wai (Class of 2013), Dr Brian Chan (Class of 2017), Dr Jared Yeh (Class of 2018) and Dr Edwin Yang (Class of 2016).

Several alumni from Class of 2018 (Dr Gwen Hwarng, Dr Amelia Koe, Dr Bobby Tan, Dr Deepali Bang, Dr Adriana Ardy) gave a talk about their HO-ship at the Academia. The alumni shared with students what to expect of their upcoming house officer postings and what to prepare for. They also asked the graduating students to provide updates about their postings so that the alumni and the alumni relations office can help match them to seniors who can tell them more about their respective postings.

It was very heart-warming to see the familiar faces of our seniors back at the school. They have always been around to offer advice to us when needed. We really appreciate how they took time to come over late on a weekday night after a busy day at work to share their valuable experiences!
