Professor Lim Swee Han, MBBS, FRCSEd (A&E), FRCP Edin, FAMS is a Senior Consultant in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Singapore General Hospital. He graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1986 with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and obtained his medical professional license from the Singapore Medical Council in 1987. He obtained his Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeon of Edinburgh in Accident and Emergency Medicine in 1992, Fellowship in Emergency Medicine from the Academy of Medicine, Singapore in 1998 and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 2012.
He is the President of the Society for Emergency Medicine in Singapore, Secretary of the Asian Society of Emergency Medicine as well as Immediate Past Chairman and current Treasurer of the Resuscitation Council of Asia. He was appointed as a member of the Medical Advisory Committee of SCDF for more than 15 years, for which he was awarded the Public Service Medal (PBM) during National Day Awards 2012. He was also appointed as the Head of Department of the Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) in Singapore General Hospital (SGH) from 2003 to 2009 during the SARS crisis. None of the staff at DEM SGH contracted SARS under his leadership through strict implementation of infection control at the DEM.
His main research interest lies in emergency cardiac care, Resuscitation (CPR training) and cardiac markers. He has authored/co-authored more than 80 papers in international journals, several with high impact factors, e.g. Lancet, Circulation, Resuscitation and Annals of Emergency Medicine, etc. He won the Young Investigators Award at Singapore’s Cardiac Society’s Annual Scientific Meeting in 1998, Best SGH Oral Paper (Ambulatory) Award in 2005. His work on vagal maneuvers and slow infusion of calcium channel blockers in the ambulatory management of supraventricular tachycardias, have been incorporated in guidelines of many resuscitation councils in the world. He has received grants from various prestigious research grants agencies, including National Medical Research Council, SingHealth Foundation, Singapore Heart Foundation, National Kidney Foundation etc.
Despite being busy with clinical and research work, he strongly believes in the need to nurture a strong medical talent pipeline for Singapore. He was Adjunct Associate Professor at Duke-NUS Medical School and Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine since 2011 and 2005 respectively. He has been a Clinical Professor at Duke-NUS Medical School and Adjunct Professor at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine since 2018 and 2019 respectively. His commitment and contribution as a teacher mentor is evident in the excellent evaluations and feedback he has received from medical students.
He was the Program Director for Transitional Year (TY) and the National Assessments Committee (NAC) PGY1 Program (SGH). He ensured TY and the PGY1s residents meet the rigorous training requirements of the Singapore Medical Council and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education to progress in their training as doctors. Furthermore, he ensures that their education and welfare needs are not compromised. He conducts regular meetings with the Residents to find out their specialty interests and to guide them in their Residency application choices. He was awarded the 2017 AM•EI Golden Apple Generativity Awards for Educators. He has been appointed Education Director, SGH Education Office with effect from 1 January 2018. He has been appointed Associate Designated Institutional Official ADIO (SGH SingHealth Residency) since 1 January 2019.
