Md Masum Mia

Principal Research Scientist, Signature Research Programme in Cardiovascular & Metabolic Disorders

Duke-NUS Medical School

Bio

Dr. Masum Mia, trained as a molecular biologist in the field of fibrosis, is a Principal Research Scientist in the department of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Disorders program (CVMD) at Duke-NUS Medical School. As a research fellow in Dr. Manvendra's lab at Duke-NUS, he has established the role of Hippo signalling mediators in myocardial injury, where he revealed the new insight of fibroblast and macrophage biology in the pathogenesis of cardiac fibrosis. His current research focuses on the role of lung fibroblasts and alveolar macrophages that impact fibro-inflammatory program in pulmonary fibrosis. Specifically, he is investigating the role of Yap/Taz signaling in macrophages, and cross-talk with fibroblasts during the course of fibrosis in lung. The overall aim of his research integrates to understand the novel cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate tissue remodelling, repair, and fibrosis after organ injury.

Dr. Mia obtained his Bachelor of Pharmacy degree with Hons from the University of Asia Pacific in Bangladesh and did his master’s as major in Molecular Bioengineering at Technical University of Dresden, Germany. He has then joined in Dr. Christian Bökel’s lab for internship in life sciences at the Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden. During his Ph.D. at the University Medical Center Groningen in Netherlands under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ruud A Bank, he has worked on collagen homeostasis in various types of fibroblasts in relation to fibrosis. As a postdoctoral fellow, he shortly worked with Dr. Allan Albig at Biose State University in United States.
