Bio
Dr Oon is a Senior Consultant clinical microbiologist with a special interest in molecular microbiology and molecular pathology. She obtained her MBBS degree in the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, University of London in 1992. Subsequently, she spent 2.5 years in internal medicine in London before heading back to Singapore for her clinical microbiology training. She has been the Head of the Molecular Laboratory Section in the Department (now Division) of Pathology in the Singapore General Hospital since 2006 where she helped to develop its range of molecular tests in microbiology, detection of mutations in somatic cancers as well as pharmacogenomics molecular tests. She also holds the position of Clinical Associate Professor at the Duke-NUS Medical School. She was Head of the Department of Molecular Pathology, Singapore General Hospital from 2016-2023 when she led the department to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and was Academic Vice-Chair (Clinical Quality and Innovation) in the Pathology Academic Clinical Programme, SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre from 2017-2023. She is also the Director of the SingHealth Office of Biosafety and chairs the SingHealth Institutional Biosafety Committee which oversees biological safety in research within SingHealth.
