Bio
Professor Tai E Shyong holds multiple academic appointments, including professorships at the National University of Singapore (NUS), Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, and Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School. He is also a Senior Consultant in the Department of Medicine at the National University Hospital (NUH), with a special focus on diabetes and metabolic diseases.
With a background in epidemiology and human genetics, Professor Tai has been instrumental in establishing cohorts to better understand the determinants and outcomes of metabolic diseases. He has led several large-scale genetic association studies, initially in Singapore and later extending to Asia, and is actively involved in numerous international genetics consortia. Over the years, he has worked on developing novel treatments for diabetes mellitus by leveraging human genetics to identify new drug targets.
Currently, Professor Tai serves as the Chief Medical Officer of Precision Health Research, Singapore (PRECISE). In this role, he is pivotal in uniting clinicians and health economists to create and evaluate prototypical clinical pathways that can be scaled to achieve better health outcomes at sustainable costs within the Singapore healthcare system. Additionally, he is dedicated to building platforms that facilitate person-centered care, ensuring that clinical care delivery respects patient autonomy and considers their aspirations and needs within the context of their lives.
