Assistant Professor

Email

Dr. Wang is an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Vision Research and the Signature Research Program in Cardiovascular & Metabolic Disorders at the Duke-NUS Medical School. He also holds concurrent appointments at the Singapore Eye Research Institute and the Genome Institute of Singapore. Dr. Wang graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2006 and received his PhD from the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory School of Biological Sciences in 2012. He underwent postdoctoral training at the Genome Institute of Singapore to study cancer metabolism. In 2020, Dr. Wang pivoted to study glaucoma genetics and joined the faculty at Duke-NUS in 2021.
Despite glaucoma being the world’s leading cause of permanent blindness, very little is understood about the role of casual genes and how they initiate and drive glaucoma pathogenesis. Dr. Wang’s group takes naturally occurring risk-associated genetic coding variants uncovered in large, multi-ethnic cohorts of glaucoma patients, and performs functional characterization to deeply understand glaucoma disease mechanisms. The group utilises a variety of orthogonal approaches- ranging from classic molecular biology techniques to multi-omics strategies - to understand variant gene function. The knowledge gained from these studies will be used to predict individual risk of glaucoma, and to develop new glaucoma subtype-specific therapeutic strategies.
