Coronavirus: Automated escalator handrail cleaner on trial at KKH (Straits Times)

In order to quell the public's fear of touching common surfaces during the COVID-19 outbreak, an automated escalator handrail cleaning device was installed at KK Women's and Children's Hospital on Friday (May 22). The device cleans handrails by disinfecting it with 1.5 per cent hydrogen peroxide that is then wiped off before the handrail is sterilised under UV light. Dr Kristen Coleman, Research Fellow at Duke-NUS' EID programme cautioned that, although the disinfection method could be effective, it should not reduce the importance of frequent hand washing with soap and water.
